President Hakainde Hichilema has urged members of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) to prioritize the party’s overall success ahead of individual political ambitions as the country prepares for future elections.
Speaking to party members, President Hichilema said the key objective is for the UPND to secure victories across all elected positions, including councilor, mayor, Member of Parliament and President.
“There will always be one person at a time, but what matters most is for us to win UPND councilor, mayor, MP and President,” he said.
The Head of State further encouraged members who may not be adopted as party candidates to remain committed and support those selected to represent the party.
“All those who will not be adopted on UPND tickets should rally behind those that will be adopted,” he said.
President Hichilema added that members who are not chosen to contest elections could still be considered for other opportunities to serve in government, including diplomatic and public service appointments.
“Some of those who will not stand will be appointed as ambassadors and into the foreign service. Others may be appointed into government or nominated to various positions,” he stated.
However, the President cautioned aspiring candidates against contesting as independents after failing to secure adoption by the party, warning that such actions could affect their chances of future appointments.
“If you become hungry and start running as an Independent, we will not appoint you as ambassadors,” President Hichilema warned.
