69 Year old Janusz Walus who killed a prominent south African leader of the communist party has been ordered to be placed on Parole
Janusz Walus was convicted of the assassination of anti apartheid leaders Chris Hani, the assassination which almost plunged the country into political violence before transitioning to its current democracy
Janusz Walus killed Chris Hani a popular communist leader a year before the country's multiracial election, He was sentenced to life in prison and his application to be released on parole has severally been rejected.
On Monday 21st of November 2022, The constitutional court of Justice Raymond Zondo ordered the minister Ronald Lamola to place Janusz Walus on parole on terms considered appropriate, stating that Walus be released on parole within the next10 Calendar Month from Monday
He was convicted of a serious crime "Cold blooded murder" as described by Zondo who reiterated that the crime almost plunged the country into a state of civil unrest, but resting on the path of law, Walus is entitled to parole
Chris Hani was at the time of his assassination , the general secretary of the south African communist party (SACP)
Walus had immigrated to South Africa from Poland in 1981 which at the time was a communist state. another accomplice was Clive Derby-Lewis, who was said to have supplied the gun that shot Hani, Clive was released in 2015 on medical parole after 22 years in prison. He died of lung cancer in 2016, at the aged of 80.
Another notorious South Africa’s apartheid murderers, Eugene de Kock, was granted parole in January 2015 after spending 20 years in jail.
Reacting to the ruling Solly Mapaila, A leader of the SACP, a political alliance of the ruling ANC called the judgment injustice. he was quoted to have said “An injustice has occurred today through justice,” Mapaila told the reporters outside the constitutional court in Johannesburg.
The spokesman for the Justice services ministry Chrispin Phiri said: “A decision has been made by the court, we will have to consider it and apply it.”
The Family of Late Hani were opposed to Waluś’s parole.
Claiming in part that “This judgment is diabolical, totally diabolical,” Hani’s widow, Limpho, told a local TV channel shortly after the decesion . “This court has not even addressed the victims.” she was quoted to have said in part.
